Technology Guidelines
We will be using a wide variety apps, websites and tech in our classes. Technology can be an awesome powerful tool, but as Spider-man reminds us, with power, we must be responsible and respectful for everyone to have the best experience as possible.
Please read through this page to understand the guideline for responsible and respectful technology use.
Digital Citizenship:
5 Things to Remember for Responsible Technology Use
1. Online Safety:
It is vitally important to practice safety when using technology in the classroom.
In our classes, we will be using our school google account. These accounts are through a secure system monitored through our district. Using your school email will keep your information safe from people outside the school, but will also give us the ability to track what you post and say online.
Do not share your login and password information with anyone.
If we ever use a website or resource outside of school programs, we will use an avatar and nickname to keep our personal information private. Students: No curse words, or inappropriate language EVER, online and off.
At the beginning of the year, Miss Jantzi will send home a release form, so that students and parents can give permission to have their picture taken in class. When posting pictures, we may have to hide people's face to protect their privacy.
2. Cyber-bullying:
Cyber-bullying is just what it sounds like - bullying through Internet applications and technologies such as instant messaging (IM), social networking sites, and cell phones. It can start easily—with a rumor, a photo, or a forwarded message—and just as easily spiral out of control.
Here at Crossler Middle School, any form of bullying is not tolerated. Remember to be safe, respectful and responsible online and off.
3. Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is stealing a person's ideas or writing. You know stealing someone's personal property like their jacket or phone is illegal. Well, someone's words and thoughts are personal property, too. When you are finding sources, it can be easy to copy and paste some information you found online, or add a picture without giving credit to the creator.
Plagiarism is not permitted in Miss Jantzi's classes. Summarize information in your own words, and always provide a list of references and sources. Miss Jantzi will give you guidelines per assignment regarding sourcing.
4. Copyright & Fair Use Law:
Similarly to the topic above, Copyright and Fair Use Law regards using other people's works within your work. Have you ever uploaded a video to YouTube with your favorite Beyonce song in the background, only to find out that the video uploaded without any sound? Well that is because you cannot use other people's works without their permission. However, you can use little bits and pieces as long as you are not getting paid for your work.
Regarding our classes, most of the projects are expected to be original creations, but for certain projects, Miss Jantzi will provide guidelines regarding using songs, video clips or other sources within our own projects.

5. Netiquette:
"The word Netiquette is a combined form of the words Internet and etiquette. Netiquette is a set of rules or guidelines for appropriate behavior while using the internet. Over time people have discovered that a general set of rules was necessary because of how easy it is to be misunderstood when interacting with others online. Basically, people didn't understand what kind of manners they should have when interacting on the Web and it caused a lot of problems.
What does netiquette mean in Miss Jantzi's classes?
For the most part, please use "academic" language.
Remember some general things to avoid:
-No "text-talk" (LOL, Omg, Cz, yass, etc.)
-No curse words, or inappropriate language EVER, online and off.
-Keep emoji use limited. ;)
Miss Jantzi will give you guidelines per assignment regarding what "language" to use.

By following these guidelines and expectations, we will be able to enjoy technology use all year. Remember:
Getting to use technology is a privilege, not a right.
If as a class we cannot follow these rules, there may be consequences.
I believe that we can all follow these guidelines and have an awesome year incorporating technology into our class!
